Brine-side corrosion
Hot concentrated brine destroys standard materials. Titanium and Cu-Ni construction with qualified welding is mandatory, since carbon steel and lesser alloys fail quickly in this service.
Scaling and thermal decline
Calcium sulphate scaling suffocates heat exchange, dropping distillate output train by train. Left unmanaged it forces earlier and more frequent outages just to keep production volumes level.
Ageing plant life extension
Many MSF trains in service today are decades old — condition assessment and staged retubing keep them producing without the capital cost of a full plant rebuild.
